Kansas City competes for top talent, John Manley shows them how to get it with Lockton

Seasoned employee benefits expert helps KC businesses curb costs

John Manley, employee benefits consultantKANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 07, 2019 – John Manley, Lockton’s newest employee benefits consultant and senior vice president, started advising clients on employee benefits in the late 1980’s; back then, the landscape of employee benefits options was much different. Kansas City businesses understand they have to offer more than medical benefits to attract top talent to the heartland, and Manley is helping them do just that.

Manley was the managing principal of The Resource Group before it was sold to Hilb Rogal & Hobbs Company (HRH) in 2007 and later was acquired by Willis Group Holdings Limited. He helped grow the business to be the fifth largest broker in Kansas City at the time, while taking care of day-to-day personnel issues and helping clients manage their own employee benefits. He says that costs were always on his mind when running his own business and continue to be when he is looking for creative solutions to help employers provide more with less.

He helped one such client when their reinsurer wanted to increase their rates by 240 percent. The client had unusually high claimant costs due to a few cases of cancer. Manley took the claims and modeled them over a few years while diving deep to understand the prognosis so that he could show the insurance carrier and underwriter that the cost was too high. He was able to negotiate with the incumbent insurer who reduced the cost by $1.6 million for Manley’s client. 

Manley got his first taste of leadership when he ran five locations and managed more than 400 employees with Greyhound Foods at the age of 25. He says that seeing employees grow and develop in their professional careers is rewarding and what drives him to help clients implement solutions to meet their human capital needs.
