Construction risk expert joins Lockton in the Mountain West

Brian Hearst has nearly 30 years of experience in construction broking, underwriting, risk management and claims

Brian HearstDENVER., July 26, 2018 – Brian Hearst has the keen ability to see a business issue and solution from various vantage points due to his experience in different construction risk management roles. The new senior vice president and construction manager at Lockton, the world’s largest privately held insurance broker, will use his deep technical expertise in construction to advise clients and lead Associates in the Mountain West region.

“In his nearly three decades in the insurance industry, Brian has worked on claims, risk management, advising and underwriting, specifically focusing on construction,” said Mark Bundy, chief operating officer of Lockton’s Mountain West operation. “His past roles allow him to see issues and solutions from various perspectives allowing him to offer our clients the most holistic approach when managing risk and business challenges.”

Hearst started his insurance career with CIGNA, when they were still a property and casualty insurance carrier, right after graduating from the University of Washington in 1988. He was exposed to construction and fell in love with the work due its complexity. Hearst went onto learn the ins and outs of construction claims and construction underwriting with St. Paul Companies in Seattle, Washington.

He also saw first-hand the challenges risk managers faced at Sound Transit where he managed insurance functions and provided analytical and financial support. Later, he served as a broker and regional resource for identifying and assisting clients with development and placement of project insurance, energy and public entity opportunities at Willis Towers Watson.

“I speak in the same language as risk managers, underwriters and carriers since I have worn those hats before,” said Hearst. “I am also able to translate that language and technical expertise so that clients understand it.”

Hearst comes to Lockton from Parker, Smith & Feek where he worked with large and middle market clients in construction, real estate, and marine construction as director of project risk services. During his time there he worked on major Owner Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIP), which provided liability limits for specific construction projects.

The only thing Hearst has done longer than insurance is skiing. When he isn’t advising clients in the office, he is coaching ski instructors how to teach skiers how to ski. Hearst became Level III certified ski instructor and divisional clinic leader with the Professional Ski Instructors of America when he was 25 years old. He later went onto be a ski school director for ten years at a ski school outside of Seattle that had more than 90 instructors and 600 students.

Hearst holds an MBA from Seattle University and a bachelor’s in international studies from the University of Washington. He will be based in Lockton’s Denver office which is located at 8110 E. Union, Suite 700, Denver, CO 80237 and can be reached by calling 303-414-6000.
