Prepared for Anything

With six U.S. locations, including major facilities in East Alton, Ill., and Grand Junction, Colo., West Star Aviation specializes in airframe and engine repair, maintenance and refurbishment, as well as avionics and accessories services.

'Proactive'

West Star Aviation values many of Lockton’s qualities as an insurance and risk management partner. But if forced to pick just one word: "Proactive," says CFO Leon Metzinger. “They’re a very proactive organization. We are always prepared. They see the future."

Never was this more evident than in 2007 when a severe storm with high straight-line winds hit West Star’s large East Alton, Ill., facility, resulting in enormous damage. “It was a very, very traumatic event, both for us and for our customers. And for the operations in total.”

As calls went out to Lockton, a team was already on the way. The response was “phenomenal,” Metzinger says. But it was something Lockton had done a few months earlier that really saved the day.

Walking Alongside Us

Lockton had pushed West Star to upgrade its business interruption coverage, securing insurance that better fit the company’s growing operations. Within a year, the storm happened. Something that might have been catastrophic instead was manageable. West Star was covered for lost profits, as well as repair and rebuilding. “This was instrumental in our success. In fact, even our survival,” Metzinger says.

And Lockton made a scary time a little easier, says Jim Lauschke, Director of Finance/IT. “To stand amongst the ruin of the storm, the hangar torn apart, walls collapsed, aircraft, water, insulation, aluminum strewn around, in the darkness — it was devastating."

I cannot express how comforting it was to have Lockton there the very next morning, walking the site, helping us get things moving and guiding us through the process.”

What 'Living Service' Looks Like

Metzinger says Lockton’s accessibility and level of service when the damaging storm hit were impressive, but he wasn’t surprised. “They always respond. Whether it’s a minor issue, or it’s a major issue, they mobilize; they respond; they act.”

There are some very unique individuals at Lockton that exemplify what they stand for as a company. It’s one thing to have a motto, but to watch people who actually operate in that mode, that’s what’s really refreshing.”

- Leon Metzinger, Chief Financial Officer

Results You Can Measure

Lockton saved West Star millions in the wake of the storm, in large part because of their knowledge of the aviation service business. Their employee benefits expertise has helped them position the company well for the future by containing costs. With Lockton’s help, West Star moved to a self-insured, consumer-driven health plan that’s put them at the forefront in their industry.

“Managing health care expenses is one of our biggest challenges,” Lauschke says. Lockton has been proactive in building a sustainable benefits program.

Experts You Can Count On

“Across the board with Lockton,” Lauschke says, “we have encountered experienced professionals that are true experts.” Metzinger continues: “Lockton is engaged with you as a company. Somebody who’s sitting beside you. It’s as if they’re part of the same company.”
