Proposals to reform the nation’s $2.3 trillion health care system are proliferating in Washington, with President Obama pushing Congress to have legislation on his desk by the fall. Key components of many health care reform proposals include extending coverage to the nearly 50 million Americans without health insurance and saving money by wringing inefficiencies out of the system.


Kansas City-based Lockton Cos. Inc. is a local stakeholder in the national debate. The Kansas City Business Journal recently discussed health care reform with Rick Kahle, president of Lockton’s employee benefits division.

What improvements can be made to the current system to reduce health care costs?

The single most important thing we can do is to focus on improving the health of the population. That dwarfs everything else combined.
